    Pro vs Free

Getting Started

Welcome to Jamprovise! It's an AI-powered practice partner: it builds backing tracks (chords, bass, drums and an optional lead line) that you play along with on your own instrument.

There are three ways to start:

  • Ask Jambot: open the Studio and type what you want, e.g. "Give me a 12-bar blues in A" or "a sad lofi progression at 80 bpm".
  • Pick a song from the Library: the Library has verified songs, lessons and practice ideas you can open straight into the Studio.
  • Build it yourself: start a blank session and add chords by hand.

New accounts get a free 14-day Pro trial (see Pro vs Free below). You don't need an account to try the Studio, but you do need one to use Jambot and to save songs.

Keyboard Shortcuts & Workflow

Use these shortcuts anywhere in the Studio:

  • Spacebar: Play or stop.
  • Cmd/Ctrl + Z: Undo (handy for getting back a deleted chord or section).
  • Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z or Cmd/Ctrl + Y: Redo.
  • Cmd/Ctrl + J: Open Jambot with the cursor in the chat box.
  • / (slash commands): Type / in the Jambot box to see the list. Slash commands run instantly, without waiting for the AI: /tempo, /key, /style, /mute, /unmute, /solo, /loop, /clear, /create, /remix, /extend, /analyze and /lucky.

Undo and Redo are also in the header's song menu.

Using Jambot

Jambot is the AI assistant in the Studio. Open it from the chat button in the footer, or press Cmd/Ctrl + J.

What you can ask

  • Create a jamtrack: "Give me a ii-V-I in Bb", "an upbeat funk groove in E minor", "something like Pink Floyd".
  • Change what's playing: "Make it faster", "change the key to D", "mute the bass", "make it jazzier", "give me a two-bar count-in".
  • Change chords: "make the third chord a minor 7th", "add a bridge", "extend this to 16 bars".
  • Ask about theory: "Which scale works over this?", "Why does this progression sound sad?". Jambot knows what's in your Studio, so "this chord" and "this song" work.
  • Roman numerals: if you ask in Roman numerals ("give me a I-vi-IV-V"), Jambot also switches the chord display to Roman numerals.

Songs from the Library

When you ask for a song that's in the Library, Jambot offers to load the real arrangement:

  • Load the full song: the chords plus the melody (on the Lead track), the instruments and the song's video.
  • Just the chords: the same song with the melody switched off. Turn the Lead track back on in the mixer if you want it later.

If you name only the title ("play Enjoy the Silence"), Jambot checks first: "Did you mean "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode?". Choose Something else if you meant a different song, then add the artist or describe what you want. If the Library has more than one song with that title, Jambot lets you pick the artist. Short or common titles that could be an instruction ("play one", "play the blues") are left to Jambot as usual, so add the artist for those.

Naming the song and the artist together skips the "Did you mean" step, and saying "just the chords" up front skips the full-song question. If a song isn't in the Library, Jambot writes its own version. Pro members also get a web search for the chords.

If you paste a YouTube link to a song that's in the Library, Jambot loads that song. For any other video, Jambot can't watch it yet, so it will ask you for the song title and artist (or the chords) instead. Free accounts can send 2 YouTube links a day.

Limits

Free accounts can send 25 Jambot messages a day and Pro accounts 300. Days reset at midnight UTC. Settings shows how many you've used today.

Text size

The text-size button in the Jambot header changes the chat text size. Starting a new project also clears any YouTube video pinned to the chat.

Help mode

On this Help page, Jambot answers questions about the app using this guide.

The Dashboard: Your Home Base

The Dashboard is your starting point after you sign in.

  • Your plan: a chip shows whether you're on Free, Pro or a Pro trial.
  • New Blank Session: opens a fresh, empty Studio ("Start from scratch").
  • Jump Back In: your most recently saved songs, plus your Unsaved Draft if you were working on something you didn't save. Jamprovise keeps that draft in your browser, so it's still there next time.

The Home page has Quick Start prompts, one-click Jambot requests that open the Studio and build a jamtrack.

The Library

The Library (in the top menu) is a public collection of verified songs and practice material. Search by title, artist or topic, and filter by type:

  • Song: a real song arrangement, usually with its melody and a video.
  • Lesson: a lesson that goes with a video.
  • Practice Idea: an exercise or progression to practise over.

Open a song's page to see its details, then click Open in Studio (or Watch & Practice in Studio) to load it. Library songs (and songs someone shared with you) aren't yours to overwrite: if you change one and want to keep your version, use Save As... to save your own copy.

The Studio: Your Creative Workspace

The Studio is where you build, play and practise along with your jamtrack.

🎡 Header: Song, Save and Share

  • Song menu (the title in the header): start a New Project, open Song Notes, Save, Save Copy As..., Undo and Redo, and open any of your recent songs or the full My Songs list.
  • Save: the Save button in the header saves your song to your account. It's greyed out when there's nothing new to save. For a song that isn't yours (a Library song or a shared link) it becomes Save As..., which saves your own copy.
  • Share: creates a link to your song that you can send to anyone.
  • Song Notes: a notes window for lyrics, practice goals or reminders, saved with the song.
  • New Project asks before it clears unsaved work.

πŸ‘ View Controls

The toolbar above your chords controls how the song is shown:

  • View mode: Detailed (full chord cards with every control), Compact (smaller cards, so more fit on screen) or Spotlight (see below).
  • Section layout: Grid, Stack or Timeline.
  • Chord notation: show Chord Names (Cmaj7, Dm), Roman Numerals (I, ii) or both.
  • Focus Mode: hides the surrounding controls so you can concentrate on the music.

πŸ”¦ Spotlight View

Spotlight is a performance view for playing along. It shows the current chord in large type with a strip of the section's chords underneath (click one to jump to it). It follows the song as it plays. Use the Guitar or Piano button in the toolbar to show a chord diagram under the chord name. Combine it with Focus Mode for a distraction-free screen. To edit chords, switch back to Detailed or Compact view.

🧩 Sections

Songs are made of sections (Verse, Chorus, Bridge…). Section controls include:

  • Edit Title, Duplicate, Repeat Section and Delete Section.
  • Split Section and Merge with Next Section.
  • Section tempo: give one section its own BPM, e.g. for slow practice on a hard passage.
  • Section key: give one section its own key (Set Key). A section with its own key keeps it when you change the song key.

πŸ”‘ Changing the Key

Click KEY in the footer (or ask Jambot) to open the key picker (a Circle of Fifths).

  • Choosing a key transposes the song. Cancel puts everything back exactly as it was.
  • If some sections are in their own key, Jamprovise asks whether to move those sections too or leave them where they are.
  • While playing, the footer's KEY shows the key of the section you're in. Clicking it edits that section's key.

🎸 Chord Cards

Each chord in a section is a card. In Detailed view each card has:

  • Edit (pencil) and Delete (βœ•).
  • Drag the handle to reorder chords. Drag a card's edge to make the chord longer or shorter.
  • Insert Chord and Duplicate Chord buttons.
  • Lead (G-clef icon, Pro): turns the lead on for that chord, so it improvises over it.
  • Freeze (snowflake, Pro): loops that one chord with the Drone, so you can practise over a single chord as long as you like. Click again to unfreeze.

Right-click a card for a quick menu with Edit, Freeze (Drone), Duplicate and Delete.

πŸ” The Chord Inspector

Click a chord to open the Chord Inspector. It has four tabs:

  • Quality: change the root and the chord type. Triads, sevenths and sixths are free; extended and altered chords (9ths, 11ths, 13ths and more) are Pro. You can also choose sharp or flat spelling here.
  • Voicing: choose the inversion (root position is free; other inversions are Pro), and lock the voicing to keep it.
  • Performance (Pro): the Lead Performer (the arpeggiator) and other playing options for this chord. When the Lead track plays a written melody (Deterministic mode), these options are off; switch it to Procedural to use them.
  • Mix: mix overrides for just this chord, such as turning a track off or changing the bass octave, for drops and builds.

🎹 Instrument Dock

The instrument dock shows what's playing on your instrument. Its tabs:

  • Chords: the current chord on guitar or piano.
  • Scales: scales that fit the current chord, on guitar or piano. Pro members can add custom scales.
  • Melody Editor: the melody (Lead track) for each chord. Pro members can edit it (tap the grid to add a note, drag to move, drag an edge to resize); free accounts can view it.
  • Bass: the bass line.

πŸŽ› The Track Mixer

Open the mixer from the footer. It has five tracks: CHORDS, LEAD, BASS, PERCUSSION and DRONE (Pro).

  • Volume and mute for every track, plus Solo to hear one track on its own.
  • Instruments: pick a different instrument for each track. Some instruments are Pro (marked with a lock). Changing an instrument by hand replaces the current style's instrument choice.
  • Patterns: change how a track plays, e.g. block chords vs arpeggios, or a different drum groove.
  • Smart Fill: adds drum fills and variation at section ends so it sounds more like a live band.
  • Lead settings: Lead Mode (Arp Mode or Melody Mode), plus the lead's octave range and speed.
  • EQ (Pro): LOW / MID / HI for each track, with Reset to Auto-EQ Defaults.

πŸ›Έ The Drone (Pro)

The Drone is a sustained tone on the song's root note that doesn't change with the chords. It's great for practising modes, intonation and tension and release. Choose its sound and volume in the mixer. Freeze a chord (snowflake) to loop that one chord over the drone.

  • Play / Stop, Rewind to Beginning and Skip to Previous / Next Section.
  • KEY and BPM: the song's key and tempo.
  • Count-In: turn the count-in on or off and choose 1–4 bars.
  • Metronome: turn the click on or off. Its menu sets the beat sounds and subdivision, and has a headphones button to preview the click on its own.
  • Shuffler: plays the chords in a random order for ear training and practice. Choose how many bars each chord lasts (1x, 2x or 4x) and the scope: Active Section, Entire Song or a custom set of chords you pick.
  • Master volume and Master EQ (Pro).
  • Jambot button to open the chat.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

πŸ”ˆ I can't hear anything

  • Click Play once: browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page.
  • On iPhone or iPad, make sure the silent switch is off (sound on). Web audio respects it.
  • Check the master volume in the footer and that the tracks aren't muted in the mixer.

πŸ’Ύ Where did my song go?

If you didn't save, it's your Unsaved Draft on the Dashboard (it lives in this browser). Saved songs are under Jump Back In on the Dashboard and in My Songs in the header's song menu. Free accounts can save 3 songs. Once you have 3, you can still update them, but saving a new one needs a free slot (delete a song in My Songs) or Pro.

πŸ€– Jambot says I've reached my limit

Free accounts get 25 Jambot messages and 2 YouTube links a day; Pro gets 300 messages. Limits reset at midnight UTC.

πŸ”‡ Why can't I hear audio when casting to my Apple TV via AirPlay?

This is a known issue with how Apple devices handle web audio. AirPlay is designed for media files (like YouTube videos) and often doesn't carry live, synthesized audio like Jamprovise's.

  • Silent switch (iPhone/iPad): make sure the silent switch on the side is off (sound on). Web audio respects it even when casting.
  • Use Screen Mirroring (iOS): instead of the browser's AirPlay button, open Control Center and choose Screen Mirroring. This sends all system audio to the TV.
  • Check Sound Output (Mac): go to System Settings > Sound > Output and choose your Apple TV. The AirPlay icon in the menu bar sometimes only mirrors the picture.

βœ‰οΈ How do I contact you?

Use Contact Us in Settings to send feedback, report a bug or ask a question.
